Welcome Aboard the Autumn Colors Express!

This is the Autumn Colors Express, the six decade-old train ride linking Huntington and Charleston with the town of Hinton during the Hinton Railroad Days Festival. This vintage passenger train brings visitors through the heart of the scenic and historic New River Gorge National Park at the peak of the fall foliage season. Travel aboard luxurious private railcars as you take in iconic views of West Virginia, on this amazing rail excursion.

See America’s newest national park by train!

The New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent, flowing northward through scenic canyons. The Autumn Colors Express follows the route of the famed Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad whose tracks hug both the New River and Kanawha River for over 50 miles offering a number of incredible views you can only see by train.

The region is rich in cultural and natural history. The area was once home to a number coal mines, timber operations, and railroad towns. Today, The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is world renowned for its outdoor recreational opportunities including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking.

Points of interest within the park that are viewable from the train include: the ghost town of Thurmond, scenic Sandstone Falls, and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge.

The Autumn Colors Express is a one of a kind event bringing luxurious private railcars from around the country together for a trip through the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The train highlights a number of beautifully restored coaches built during the golden age of the American passenger train. Each train car is unique, but all feature comfortable seating, large picture windows, and restroom access. We offer a number of different seating options starting at only $179* per person.

In addition to affordable coach seating, the Autumn Colors Express is proud to be one of the last public passenger trains in the country to feature both glass topped dome cars and panoramic round-ended observation cars on a mainline railroad. Be sure to book your tickets early, seats in these special railcars sell out quick!

Meet our volunteers!

The Autumn Colors Express is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteers from around the county. The team at Rail Excursion Management Company is proud to partner with local community groups and nationally recognized rail preservation organizations to operate the Autumn Colors Express.
